Jeff Somers Band Bio

Worship. Period.

This is the slogan of the Moncton, New Brunswick young adult worship movement called "the Spot" (www.hitthespot.ca), and the driving value behind Jeff Somers Band, who came together through this event.

The start of the Jeff Somers Band story is tough to pin down. Suffice it to say, it is a story of God's timing and plan. In his final year at university in Moncton, Jeff was struck with an idea... at least eventually it became an idea. He began to notice in himself and feel among his peers a hunger for something deeper in worship...something beyond their current experience. There was also an increasingly apparent gap in community and ministry for this age group (18–35 year olds) in the churches of the local area. Thus, The Spot was born—a place for young adults to join together across church and denominational borders and make God's Greatest Commandment their highest priority. Jeff embraced the challenge of leading these worship times and did so with the help of a variety of musicians. After lots of growth and as many changes, eventually the band settled into a consistent line-up and Jeff Somers Band took shape, continuing their role at The Spot and growing outside the event as well.

Since their beginning, the band has made it a priority to not only create excellent and creative music, but also the opportunity for the band and audiences to join together in worshipping their Creator. "From a young age, I've had a passion for creating and performing music," comments Jeff, "and as my understanding of worship grew the two began to grow together. I feel like music is a gift we've been given by God...and for me, the highest purpose for this gift is to give glory back to Him."

With a rock edge, an emphasis on melody and lyrical content, and influences ranging from David Crowder Band and Chris Tomlin, to U2 and Coldplay, JSB has a unique yet familiar sound. They are unapologetically a 'guitar band' and whether chiming out a unique revamp of a worship standard or offering one of their fresh originals, their tight and groovy sound commands both attention and head-bobbing.

After the amicable departure of Dave "Cobra" Yanofsky (keys) and Dennis Prescott (lead guitar) for personal and professional reasons, JSB consists of Jeff "Sunny" Somers (lead vocals and guitar), and original members Tim "T-Bone" Richardson (bass), and Jon "No Nickname" Arsenault (drums), joined by recent additions Jason "J" Muir (guitar) and Jamie "JamCam/Top Gun" Cambers (lead guitar).

2005 brings the completion and release of JSB's first full-length album, "The Origin of Moonlight", a self-produced project of original material. "It was very exciting and satisfying to sit in the producer's chair on this project," says Jeff. "Though my producing ability is pedestrian at best, it was a blast to get in a room with the guys and tackle the task of recording the songs in a creative and sonically-pleasing way...totally different from live performance, but equally as invigorating."

JSB is looking forward to sharing their new material with listeners, though they admit not all of it is technically new. Jeff comments, "It was a relief to me not only to track the new songs we've put together as a band, but also some stuff that's been with me for a while now...to finally get them off my chest and give them a life, so to speak."

"I think of a song like "Nothing Left to Say", which I had written a few years back...today it feels good to hear that song the way I always heard it in my head while playing it alone with my guitar," adds J Muir," or 'The Kelowna Song', which Sunny and myself had begun writing a couple of years back while we were both living in Vancouver, and now to hear it finished and recorded is very satisfying."

JSB are indeed very satisfied with the project, a locally recorded, small budget endeavor engineered by Dan Bourgeouis at THe Pumpk'n Patch in Riverview, New Brunswick. "I'm very passionate about the project and proud of what we've done.", says Tim Richardson. the album's first single, "Poetry in Motion", was featured on CMC's "Launch: Ignition" compilation, and debuted at #3 on More Radio's AC/CANCON charts, recently rising to #1 in the country. The album, released nationally by CMC Distribution, has been well-received and continues to do well. While continuing their commitment to "The Spot", the boys have had opportunity to play at a variety of venues in both Canada and the U.S. and anticipate a busy 2006 with a number of large and exciting events already booked.

What does the future hold for Jeff Somers Band? They are quick to point out whose decision that is. Jeff remarks, "I struggle with the role of ambition in a worship band. After all, we are trying to draw attention to God, not really ourselves, hence the album's "moon" theme. That being said, we all would love to continue to use the gifts God has blessed us with to further His glory, and we enjoy it immensely. Wherever He leads we'll be quick to follow."
